The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the results for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) during a ceremony held at State House Nakasero in Kampala.
A detailed analysis of the results reveals a decline in the number of distinctions across all subjects, indicating the challenges faced by candidates in tackling questions that required higher-level abilities. However, UNEB has also reported an overall improvement in the 2024 PLE results compared to the previous year, 2023.
The review shows that many of the best-performing schools are located in urban areas, with some achieving 100% of their candidates in Division One. Despite this success, there has been a slight drop in the total number of candidates who earned Division One compared to the previous year. Nonetheless, the pass rate for the 2024 PLE has shown an improvement over 2023, offering some encouragement for educators and students alike.
In a concerning development, UNEB also disclosed that 64,251 candidates were ungraded and will be ineligible for Senior One admission. This represents a significant portion of candidates who were unable to meet the minimum requirements for progression to secondary school.
Minister of Education Janet Museveni addressed the results, urging students who did not meet expectations to remain hopeful.
“To those who didn’t meet expectations, don’t give up—opportunities in Secondary Schools and TVET programs await. Let us encourage every learner to strive for success and resilience,” she said during the announcement.
Minister Museveni also highlighted the importance of following health protocols, urging schools to adhere to Ministry of Health guidelines, especially concerning the ongoing concerns related to MPox.
Looking ahead, the Selection Exercise for Senior One is scheduled for January 30-31, with classes for the 2025 academic year set to begin on February 17.
