President Yoweri Museveni, has commissioned a 2 kilometre paved road
worth10 Billion shillings leading to Rushoroza Cathedral, in Kabale Municipality.
The government through the Uganda Support to Urban Infrastructure
Development (USMID) program, which also supported Kabale and 32 other local governments, financed the annex road.
“We value the vital infrastructure that has contributed to the beauty of the
region leading to the Cathedral. The new tarmac road and the lighting have
greatly pleased the people in the Rushoroza neighbourhood,” the Kabale Catholic Bishop Callistus Rubaramira said.
In his remarks, President Yoweri Museveni, promised that the country’s national development plan is anchored on infrastructure among others, and thus should be a formidable pillar in lifting millions out of poverty.
“Broadly, we look at infrastructure as a tool and means to achieve full
productivity of our population. We need to seek wealth and we seek the
Kingdom of God,” Museveni advised.
Three roads—Rushoroza, Bwankosa, and Bushekwiire—were built at a cost of
21.7 billion shillings under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure
Development USMID.
According to the Lands, Housing and Urban Development Minister Judith
Nabakooba, “the infrastructure has also enhanced property values, improved
water drainage, enhanced security in the night due to illumination (street
lighting) and broad commercial prospects for the population.”
She disclosed that all urban road projects in the ten new regional cities and the other 22 local governments are now in use, as a new project is anticipated to expand the number of paved roads in the urban centers beyond the current 610 kilometers.
“We are working hard to make sure that we have a successor program to USMID, even if we realize that there is still a shortfall in our urban road network.
As a result, all cities and municipalities would asphalt additional areas to enhance the quality of life and business environment,” Nakabooba pledged.
The President thanked the Kabale Catholic diocese for their effort in encouraging commercial activities citing the production of tea and such other crops, promising full support towards their value addition.
“I recall that as a (Kabale) diocese, you have been involved in tea production and other projects. I will soon call for a meeting for use to strategize how best we can support you including in adding value to your production,” Museveni added.
