Global biometric authentication firm Identy.io has announced plans to expand its footprint in Africa, targeting Kenya and Nigeria as part of a strategy to strengthen digital identity infrastructure across the continent.
The mobile-first identity verification company said it will enhance its service offerings in key African markets and has appointed a regional leadership team to engage governments, financial institutions, telecommunications firms and other regulated sectors.
As part of the expansion, Matus Kapusta has been named Product Director for the company’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) portfolio.
The move comes as several African governments accelerate the rollout of national digital identity systems aimed at improving public service delivery, deepening financial inclusion and building digital public infrastructure.
According to World Bank ID4D data, about 80% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa have basic identification, although coverage in many countries remains below 70%, limiting access to essential services and economic participation.
Kenya and Nigeria are among countries investing heavily in integrated digital ID ecosystems that link identity systems to financial services, mobile connectivity and government platforms.
Antony Vendhan, Co-founder of Identy.io, said the company aims to position itself as a long-term partner in Africa’s digital transformation by offering a software-first model that reduces reliance on costly biometric hardware.
The firm’s technology enables biometric capture using standard smartphones, processes identity documents, issues digital identities to individuals without formal ID and supports large-scale verification and deduplication.
Identy.io’s ABIS system has completed compliance processes under the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP) and is listed on the MOSIP Marketplace, enabling governments to evaluate it for national digital ID deployments.
The company said further African market entries will follow under a phased regional growth strategy aligned with national development priorities.
