Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has spearheaded a sanitation drive at the Port Bell landing site in Luzira, in collaboration with several partners, including the Rotaract Club of Luzira, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
The clean-up exercise, which was aimed at restoring cleanliness to the busy landing site, was attended by Nakawa Mayor, Paul Mugambe, who praised the brewery’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
David Kimaka, UBL’s Head of Business Integrity, highlighted the company’s focus on maintaining a clean environment as a shared responsibility.
“We understand the impact of poor sanitation on livelihoods, especially for the fishermen and businesses that rely on this landing site. As a company operating within this community, we are committed to setting a high standard and ensuring shared growth and prosperity,” Kimaka said during the event.
With Kampala’s population swelling to 2.5 million, rapid urbanization has brought about significant waste management challenges.
According to data from Makerere University’s School of Public Health, around 87% of Kampala’s residents live in informal housing, contributing to the city’s daily waste production of 1,500 tons, of which only 40%-50% is collected. The rest often ends up polluting water bodies, impacting areas like Port Bell.
Mayor Mugambe lauded UBL for its efforts in supporting local communities. “Uganda Breweries has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the community by organizing clean-up initiatives, donating cleaning materials, and upgrading sanitation facilities. I urge residents to maintain this cleanliness,” he said.
The clean-up is part of UBL’s broader “Water for Life” initiative, which has seen the company partner with various organizations to improve water access and sanitation across Uganda.
Last year, UBL invested over UGX 600 million to construct toilet blocks in several Kampala neighborhoods, including Namuwongo, Bukoto, and Katwe. Additional participants in the Luzira clean-up included the Turinawe Community Foundation, Uganda Junior Rangers, and Luzira Achievers Youth Group.
