The Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) has received a significant boost with the donation of health equipment valued at UGX 1.3 billion.
The initiative, spearheaded by Ecobank Uganda in collaboration with Malaria Free Uganda and other partners, is expected to double UBTS’s capacity in blood donation and transfusion services.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ecobank Uganda Managing Director Grace Muliisa emphasized the partnership’s goal of addressing critical health challenges.
“This contribution will strengthen UBTS’s ability to manage severe malaria-related anaemia and other urgent medical needs,” Muliisa said.
“We have acquired 3 platelet agitators and 4 floor preparative centrifuges, which will strengthen UBTS’s ability to manage severe malaria-related anemia and other urgent medical needs like cancer,” she added.
The equipment, which includes advanced tools for blood collection, storage, and transfusion, comes at a time when Uganda faces recurrent blood shortages that hinder timely medical interventions, particularly for patients suffering from severe malaria.

Kenneth Mugisha, Board Chairman of Malaria Free Uganda, hailed the donation as a transformative step in combating malaria and related health complications.
“This equipment is a game-changer in managing severe malaria. By ensuring a reliable blood supply, we move closer to zero malaria deaths and averting preventable losses,” he remarked.
Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Uganda, with severe cases often requiring blood transfusions. This donation aligns with ongoing efforts to eliminate malaria and strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
UBTS officials expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting that the equipment will enhance their ability to respond to emergencies and save lives.
This donation is part of Ecobank’s broader corporate social responsibility agenda, which focuses on health, education, and economic empowerment initiatives.
