The East African Community (EAC) has taken a significant step toward enhancing trade promotion by fostering collaboration among its trade promotion agencies.
A high-level meeting brought together key stakeholders to align efforts in boosting exports and strengthening the region’s position in global markets.
Annette Ssemuwemba, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Customs, Trade, and Monetary Affairs for the EAC Secretariat, emphasized the importance of trade promotion agencies in facilitating export growth. “Trade promotion agencies are crucial within the overall ecosystem for trade promotion in the East African Community. In each of the five partner states, these agencies coordinate export development programs,” she stated.

The meeting focused on joint export promotion, recognizing that EAC member states share common export commodities, including coffee, cocoa, and avocado. By working together, the region can pool resources to meet large-scale market demands and sustain international trade relationships.
A key highlight of the meeting was the development of a four-year work program outlining strategic objectives, joint initiatives, and expected outcomes aimed at enhancing export performance.

To solidify their commitment, the agencies agreed to sign a memorandum of cooperation, ensuring the effective implementation of their initiatives. Additionally, terms of reference for a technical working group were established to oversee progress and address emerging trade issues.
Ssemuwemba noted that the EAC’s trade balance remains a challenge, with the region importing more than it exports. Increasing regional exports is a priority, particularly for small businesses, women-led enterprises, and youth-owned companies.
With support from the International Trade Centre (ITC) and funding from the European Union, the EAC aims to empower these businesses and strengthen trade development. This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing the region’s competitiveness in international markets and fostering economic growth
