Speaker of Parliament Anita Among on Saturday evening narrowly escaped a road accident after a trailer reportedly swerved toward her official vehicle along the Kampala–Jinja highway in Mukono District.
The incident occurred at around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Museveni in her capacity as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Second Vice Chairperson (Female).
According to eyewitness accounts, the trailer, which was heading towards Jinja, suddenly veered off its lane and moved toward the Speaker’s convoy shortly after several vehicles had passed. The driver of the Speaker’s car reacted swiftly, steering to the edge of the road to avoid a collision.
Although no injuries were reported, the near-miss caused panic among members of the convoy and nearby motorists. The Speaker was later escorted safely to Kampala under heightened security.
Mukono District Police have since detained the trailer driver, identified as Lubega Ivan, aged 32, and his co-driver, Waiswa Amis, to assist with investigations into the incident.
Authorities say they are probing whether reckless driving, fatigue, or mechanical failure may have contributed to the dangerous maneuver.
Police spokesperson for the area confirmed that the suspects are in custody and that the trailer has been impounded pending inspection by traffic investigators.
The Speaker’s office had not issued an official statement by press time, but sources close to her security detail described the incident as a “very close call” that could have had tragic consequences.
The Kampala–Jinja highway remains one of Uganda’s busiest and most accident-prone roads, with several high-profile near misses and crashes recorded in recent years.
