The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced January 15, 2026, as the date for Uganda’s next General Election, marking the beginning of a crucial electoral season for the country.
In a statement released today, the EC said the decision follows extensive consultations and aligns with the constitutional requirement to hold general elections within the first 30 days of the final year of the presidential term.
The announcement sets the stage for political parties, candidates, and voters to prepare for one of the most significant national exercises in Uganda’s democratic calendar.
The EC Chairperson noted that the electoral roadmap is already being implemented, with activities such as updating the national voters’ register, verifying polling stations, and accrediting election observers scheduled in the coming months.
He urged all stakeholders to ensure peaceful participation and adherence to the law throughout the process.
The announcement provides clarity and stability, allowing parties to organize primaries, mobilize support, and prepare campaign strategies early.
Meanwhile, the EC has pledged to deploy technology to enhance transparency and efficiency during voter registration and result transmission.
The 2026 elections will determine Uganda’s next President, Members of Parliament, and local government leaders.
As the countdown begins, attention now turns to how political actors and the electorate will navigate the months leading up to January 15, 2026—a date that will shape the nation’s political future.
