Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has achieved a major milestone in technology and innovation as its AgriChain Team clinched victory in the Regional Innovation Track of the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026, earning the right to represent Uganda at the Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, from June 2 to June 5, 2026.
The winning team—comprising Okoo Elvis, Wasswa Atibu, and Masendi Aaron under the mentorship of instructor Alinaitwe Mukonyezi—impressed judges with their AI-driven project, AgriChain. Developed using Huawei’s MindSpore platform, AgriChain seeks to transform Africa’s agricultural sector by enhancing efficiency, transparency, and productivity across agricultural value chains.
The journey to the regional title was fiercely competitive. The MMU team advanced from preliminary rounds in December 2025, excelled in the National Finals in January 2026, and ultimately outperformed teams from 21 Sub-Saharan African countries during the Regional Finals held in Kampala on March 5, 2026.
Arinda Ronnie Akantorana, Public Relations Manager at Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co., Ltd, praised the students’ achievement. “Their success on such a competitive platform reflects the high standards of education, mentorship, and technical training offered by Mountains of the Moon University. These students are an inspiration to their peers, and we are excited to support them as they prepare for the global stage,” he said.
Prof. Pius Coxwell Achanga, Vice Chancellor of MMU, congratulated the team, noting that the competition provides a crucial platform for nurturing talent. “Winning at the regional level and qualifying for the global finals underscores our commitment to digital skills development and innovation. We are proud to represent both MMU and Uganda internationally,” he said.
Team member Aaron Masendi, a Computer Science student, highlighted the broader impact of the experience. “Participating in this competition has sharpened our technical skills and reinforced our commitment to developing transformative agricultural solutions in Africa,” he said.
Since its launch in 2015, the Huawei ICT Competition has become a global platform, connecting students and educators from over 2,000 universities across 100 countries. It fosters innovation in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and networking and is recognized as a flagship program partner of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy.
