Allan Chekwech has been appointed the new Acting General Manager – Editorial at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda, stepping into the leadership role vacated by veteran journalist Daniel Kalinaki, who retired at the end of March 2026 after nearly three decades in the newsroom.
Kalinaki, a highly respected figure in Ugandan journalism, concluded a long and impactful career on March 31, 2026, marking the end of more than 28 years of service with NMG.
During his tenure, he rose from a reporter to become General Manager – Editorial, shaping newsroom culture and mentoring generations of journalists. Management and colleagues celebrated his legacy at a farewell event, with NMG-Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa lauding his dedication, professionalism and contribution to journalism both locally and regionally
Known affectionately as “DK,” Kalinaki played a pivotal role in steering editorial direction at the Daily Monitor, overseeing digital transformation and investigative reporting that defined the publication’s influence.
He urged young journalists to pursue the profession with passion and curiosity, even as he steps away from mainstream newsroom responsibilities to pursue personal projects, including books and documentaries.
Allan Chekwech’s elevation to the acting editorial leadership comes at a critical time as NMG-U continues to adapt to shifting media landscapes and digital consumption patterns.
His appointment reflects the company’s confidence in his ability to sustain editorial excellence and guide teams through evolving industry challenges.
