Prosecutors in Rwanda are pushing for a 20-month prison sentence for Miss Rwanda 2022, Divine Muheto, in connection with a series of traffic violations.
The charges stem from an incident where Muheto reportedly drove under the influence, drove without a valid permit, and fled the scene after causing an accident that damaged public property.
During a court appearance, the prosecution requested six months for the drink-driving offense, two months for driving without a permit, and one year for fleeing after causing damage to infrastructure.
The cumulative sentence recommendation amounts to one year and eight months in prison.
Muheto, 20, has accepted responsibility for the charges of drink-driving and causing the accident, expressing regret for her actions.
Her defense team, in turn, has appealed to the court for leniency, highlighting her cooperation and remorse, arguing that, given her role as a public figure, a fine would be a more appropriate penalty, urging the court to consider her as a young individual with a strong future and positive influence.
The court is scheduled to announce its decision on the sentencing on November 6.
