PostBank Uganda has joined forces with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) to address critical blood shortages in health facilities nationwide.
The two organizations launched a blood donation drive today at PostBank’s Head Office in Kampala, with plans to expand the initiative to the Northern, Eastern, and Western regions of Uganda.
PostBank Uganda’s Managing Director, Julius Kakeeto, emphasized the urgency of blood donations, particularly as the festive season approaches.
“Many people travel during the holidays, and unfortunately, increased road traffic leads to accidents. Blood can mean the difference between life and death in such moments. We urge everyone able to donate to do so today and whenever the opportunity arises,” he stated.
Kakeeto linked health to economic prosperity, noting that a productive workforce depends on a healthy population. Through its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) agenda, PostBank is committed to fostering prosperity by promoting health initiatives.
“Our purpose is to foster prosperity for Ugandans, which is why we are advocating for a healthy population that can actively contribute to the country’s development,” he added.
UBTS Executive Director, Dr. Dorothy Kyeyune Byabazaire, highlighted the persistent need for blood in Uganda.
“The country requires approximately 1,000 units of blood daily, yet blood has a shelf life of only 35 days, making sustained collection efforts critical,” she explained.
Dr. Byabazaire commended PostBank for its support and expressed gratitude to donors who help maintain blood supplies for emergencies such as severe anemia, accidents, childbirth complications, and chronic conditions like sickle cell disease.
