The Kasese District Local Government, under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer (UGFIT) program, has officially launched the construction of the Kibingo-Kilambaghiro Hills Gravity Flow Scheme in Munkunyu Sub-County, Bukonzo East County. The project, valued at UGX 600 million, aims to enhance access to clean water and improve sanitation in the region.
Speaking at the launch yesterday, Mustafa Kikusa, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), urged the local community to prioritize the protection of the water catchment area. “This initiative is a collective responsibility. Safeguarding the gravity flow source will ensure the project’s sustainability,” Kikusa emphasized.
Kikusa also called on the sub-county leadership to collaborate closely with the contractors to achieve high-quality results.
Ndungu Patrick Syaimbuma, the Kasese District Water Engineer, highlighted the scheme’s significant impact on the community. “The project is designed to serve over 28,000 residents in Kabingo Village, Kyabangule Parish, and surrounding areas. It will initially provide 2,000 liters of water per day through 80 water stands, with 22 stands to be operational in the first phase,” Syaimbuma stated.
The Kibingo-Kilambaghiro Hills Gravity Flow Scheme is expected to alleviate water scarcity and reduce waterborne diseases in the area, transforming the lives of thousands of residents.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism about its potential to address long-standing water and sanitation challenges in the region.
