Masindi district has witnessed an overwhelming turnout of voters seeking to update their details in the national voters’ register.
Unlike previous days, today saw a significant increase in numbers at update stations, as voters rushed to finalize their registration ahead of the initial closure of the exercise.
The voter register update exercise, which commenced on January 20, was originally scheduled to close on February 10.
However, the Electoral Commission recently announced a seven-day extension, giving eligible voters more time to make necessary changes.
Update officers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the surge in numbers was due to the perception that today marked the final day of the exercise.
In stark contrast to earlier days, when individuals turned up sporadically, today saw large crowds queuing to confirm or modify their voter details.
According to Everest Twinomujuni, the Masindi District Electoral Commission returning officer, 4,706 new voters had been registered as of Monday.
Additionally, a total of 5,434 voters have applied to transfer their voting stations from other areas to Masindi district.
Twinomujuni urged voters who have not yet updated their details to take advantage of the extended period to do so.
He emphasized that updating the voter register is a critical step in ensuring eligibility for the upcoming 2026 general elections.
