The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has named Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its next Group Chairman, succeeding Tony O. Elumelu, who will retire on August 21 after completing the maximum 12-year tenure for non-executive directors prescribed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Here are seven key facts about the man set to lead one of Africa’s largest banking groups:

2. He has deep institutional knowledge of UBA
Although he joined UBA’s Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024, Nnorom previously spent more than eight years in senior executive leadership at the bank. During that period, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.
3. He played a key role in UBA’s pan-African expansion
As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Nnorom oversaw the bank’s operations across multiple African markets, helping strengthen its regional footprint and support its strategy of becoming a leading pan-African financial institution.
4. He is the Group CEO of Heirs Holdings
Since June 2017, Nnorom has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, where he oversees a diversified investment portfolio spanning financial services, power, healthcare, hospitality, real estate, energy and technology.
5. He previously led Transcorp
Before joining Heirs Holdings, Nnorom served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp) between September 2014 and May 2017, leading the conglomerate’s investments in power, hospitality, agriculture and energy.
6. He brings more than four decades of leadership experience
A Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Nnorom has accumulated over 40 years of experience across banking, finance, auditing and corporate management, making him one of Nigeria’s most accomplished business leaders.
7. He will chair one of Africa’s largest banking groups
Upon assuming office, Nnorom will oversee UBA’s operations across more than 20 African countries and key global financial centres, including London, New York, Paris and Dubai. The bank serves over 50 million customers and employs approximately 25,000 people, making it one of the continent’s leading financial institutions.
