Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called on all 556 Members of Parliament (MPs) to take a leading role in environmental conservation by planting at least 1,000 trees each.
This initiative aims to counteract rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns that have recently affected many parts of the country.
“In the past few weeks, you must have experienced the high temperature and humidity in various parts of the country. This is a reminder that climate change is real,” Speaker Among stated. “Unless we take deliberate mitigating measures, we remain at risk. If each MP plants 1,000 trees, we will create meaningful change.”
Following the Speaker’s call, MPs have begun mobilizing their communities to plant trees, with some already launching initiatives in their respective constituencies.
MP Daniel Kato of Nakasongola District led a campaign that saw thousands of trees planted, involving local leaders, students, and environmental activists.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, citing the urgent need for climate action. “When I was young, we had plenty of rain, but now it’s unpredictable,” said Mama Nambi, a village elder. “This effort gives us hope for a better future.”
Environmentalists have praised the move but urged for long-term policies to ensure sustainability. If fully implemented, the initiative could result in over half a million trees planted, strengthening Uganda’s fight against deforestation and climate change.
