The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, has been declared the winner of the Kawempe North by-election, securing 17,764 votes.
The announcement was made by Kampala Electoral Commission Returning Officer Henry Makabayi late on Thursday, confirming Luyimbazi’s victory over his closest competitor, Nambi Faridah of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who garnered 8,593 votes.
The by-election was held following the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, whose passing left the seat vacant.

Speaking after his victory, Luyimbazi pledged to prioritise service delivery, youth empowerment, and improved infrastructure in the area. “This victory belongs to the people of Kawempe North. I will work tirelessly to ensure their voices are heard,” he said.
NRM’s Faridah conceded defeat but expressed concerns over voter turnout and election conduct.
Uganda’s capital, Kampala, remains a key battleground between the opposition and the ruling party, with NUP maintaining significant support in urban areas.
The Electoral Commission has urged all parties to respect the outcome and focus on serving the electorate.
