Hopping on a motorcycle, locally called a ‘boda boda,’ is an exhilarating and practical option. My short motorcycle journey through Kampala offered an exciting mix of convenience, negotiation, and a firsthand experience of the city’s dynamic nature.
Setting Off from the National Theatre
My journey began around 10 a.m. after attending a meeting with a politician at the National Theatre. Given Kampala’s unpredictable traffic and my need to make it to my next meeting on time, a boda boda was the best way to navigate the city quickly. Standing along Parliamentary Avenue under the scorching sun, I hailed a boda boda rider, ready for my next adventure.
Negotiating the Fare
Boda boda fares in Kampala are never fixed, and negotiating is an essential skill. The rider initially asked for 4,000 Ugandan shillings, which, though reasonable for the short distance, could easily have been inflated. Many riders take advantage of uninformed passengers, charging double or even triple the fair price. However, with some bargaining skills, I was able to pull down the cost to 1,000 UGX, ensuring a fair deal.
The Ride Through the City
The ride to my destination, Rwenzori Courts in upscale Nakasero, took about six minutes. The journey offered a thrilling glimpse into the city’s infrastructure, lifestyle, and everyday hustle.
Starting from the Nile Avenue roundabout, we moved toward the Speke Road roundabout, joining Lumumba Avenue. As we weaved through traffic, the sheer speed and agility of the boda boda became apparent—maneuvering through tight spaces, bypassing long queues of cars, and offering an unfiltered view of Kampala’s streets.
Roadblocks and a Change of Plans
As we approached the Grand Imperial Hotel roundabout, I was met with an unexpected obstacle—ongoing construction had blocked the route. This is a common occurrence in Kampala, where roadworks and diversions often disrupt normal traffic flow. My rider had to stop, and I had no choice but to get off and cross the barricades on foot to access Rwenzori Courts, which directly faces State House Nakasero.
According the officials, this converging point for Lumumba Avenue, Nakasero Road, The Square 2 Road, Speak Road and Ternan Avenue is being replaced with a signalized intersection which will ease traffic flow and the overall road user experience.
