A major transition in Uganda’s electricity sector has officially taken place as UMEME Limited handed over operations to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). This marks the beginning of a new phase aimed at providing more reliable and affordable electricity to all Ugandans.
The handover follows the expiry of UMEME’s 20-year concession, which had been in place since 2005. UEDCL, a government-owned entity, is now tasked with managing power distribution across the country. Officials have reassured citizens that the transition will be smooth, with efforts focused on improving service delivery, reducing power outages, and expanding electricity access to rural areas.
Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa hailed the development as a “new dawn for Uganda’s electricity sector,” emphasizing that the government is committed to ensuring efficiency and affordability.
Consumers have expressed mixed reactions to the transition, with some hopeful that government control will lead to lower tariffs, while others remain skeptical about service improvements.
As UEDCL takes over, all eyes are on how effectively it will manage operations and fulfill its promise of delivering a more stable and accessible electricity supply for Ugandans.
