More than 65 homes and large swathes of farmland have been destroyed in Karusandara Sub-county, Kasese District, following heavy rains that caused River Mubuku to overflow.
The floods, which swept through the area over the weekend, have left at least 246 families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
According to Kasese District Planner, Mr. Joseph Isingoma, the flooding was worsened by poor riverbank management, with locals engaging in harmful activities such as brick making, sand mining, and cultivation along the riverbanks.
“These practices weaken the natural barriers, allowing water to flood into nearby homes and farms,” Isingoma said.
He confirmed that district authorities are coordinating with the central government and potential well-wishers to mobilize emergency support for the affected families.
In the meantime, Isingoma urged residents, particularly those in low-lying valley areas, to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. “Parents should avoid leaving children at home unattended, especially in these flood-prone zones,” he cautioned.
Relief efforts are expected to begin soon, though the scale of destruction poses a significant challenge for recovery. Authorities continue to assess the full impact as displaced families seek temporary shelter.
