The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued a directive barring schools from publicly displaying individual Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) results.
The move aims to protect learners’ privacy and curb emotional distress caused by public exposure.
In a circular dated May 7, Permanent Secretary Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda instructed school heads to cease publishing students’ scores, result slips, or photographs on billboards, social media, and other public platforms.
She cited violations of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.
“The Ministry has observed with concern the continued practice of sharing individual UNEB results through various public media,” Dr. Turyagyenda noted. “This breaches the Act, which safeguards the confidentiality of learners’ personal data.”
She added that exposing results can lead to undue pressure, anxiety, and potential stigma for students and their families.
All schools have been directed to provide results privately to students and parents via secure, official channels like sealed envelopes or verified digital platforms. Institutions are also warned against using exam results for promotional purposes.
Instead, schools are encouraged to highlight holistic educational achievements, including extracurricular activities and community involvement, in their public messaging.
