Security has been tightened around Mbarara City as delegates of the Democratic Party (DP) gather for a highly charged national delegates conference set to determine the party’s next leadership. Delegates from across the country are undergoing strict verification before being allowed entry into the venue.
Amid the heightened tension, Bukoto Central MP and presidential hopeful Richard Sebamala caused a stir when he forced his way into the gated premises where the verification exercise was underway. Security officers and party officials scrambled to restore order as he demanded access.
The conference, which has drawn national attention, comes at a critical time for the opposition party, with deep divisions emerging over the party’s relationship with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
DP Vice President for Western Uganda, Imam Makumbi, expressed confidence that the incumbent party president and Justice Minister Norbert Mao would retain his position with a commanding 95% of the vote.
However, not all delegates agree. Presidential contender Dr. Michaal Lulume Bayiga issued a passionate appeal to delegates to vote him into office, calling for an end to what he described as an “unholy marriage” between the DP and the NRM.
“We are a laughing stock. Everyone says we are married to NRM,” Bayiga said. “Today is our only chance. Let us vote for change and remove Mr Mao. Let him go and serve as Justice Minister—we need to reclaim our party.”
With the outcome poised to shape the future of one of Uganda’s oldest political parties, delegates say the conference could mark either the “burial or resurrection” of the Democratic Party. Results are expected to be announced later today.
