The Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA) has arrested Tumusiime Harriet, an enrolled comprehensive nurse and resident of Alliance, Kakooba in Mbarara City, for illegally possessing and selling government-labeled medicines and medical devices.
According to NDA, Tumusiime was found operating a private drug shop in Mbarara City, where she was selling restricted medicines marked “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale.”

The drugs included cardiac aspirin, labor-inducing medication for pregnant women, multivitamins for malnourished children, and malaria testing kits.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Tumusiime is affiliated with Rubaya Health Center II in Ibanda District, raising concerns about internal drug theft and diversion from public health facilities.
“She was taken to the Mbarara Grade One Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded until July 1, 2025, when her case will be heard,” NDA according to Abbiaz Rwamwiri, the spokesperson .
The arrest is part of a wider crackdown by the NDA targeting theft and illegal sale of government drugs. Since March 2024, the enforcement campaign has led to the recovery of stolen medicines worth over UGX 6 billion.
NDA has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health by ensuring that government-provided medicines reach their intended beneficiaries. Authorities have also urged the public to report suspicious drug sales, especially those involving medicine labeled “Not for Sale.”
Investigations into whether more individuals are involved in the racket are ongoing.
