In Uganda’s entrepreneurial landscape, where many women face entrenched cultural and economic barriers, stories of transformation stand out. One such story is that of Maria Gorret Nakanwagi, founder of Nature’s Essence Ltd, an agribusiness that is changing lives through mushroom farming. Her journey is also a powerful testament to the impact of the Dfcu Rising Woman Initiative—a platform that continues to empower women with tools, knowledge, and visibility to thrive in business.
The Dfcu Rising Woman Initiative: Fueling Female Potential
Since its launch in 2018, the Dfcu Rising Woman Initiative—spearheaded by dfcu Bank in partnership with the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA)—has reached over 70,000 women entrepreneurs across Uganda.
Through regional trainings, business competitions, and access to seed capital, the initiative offers women the chance to build, scale, and share their enterprises with confidence.

Now in its seventh season, Rising Woman has grown beyond a competition to become a movement, a mentorship hub, and a network of female changemakers across the country.
Maria’s Story: From Personal Crisis to National Inspiration
In 2022, after a 15-year government career, Maria retired early to launch Nature’s Essence Ltd, driven by a personal mission. When a close family member was diagnosed with diabetes, she discovered the medicinal value of mushrooms. What started as a small-scale experiment soon evolved into a full-fledged agribusiness focused on vegetable and herb value chains—with mushrooms at its core.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Maria’s mushroom products proved resilient, meeting rising demand for immune-boosting, natural foods. This success laid the foundation for her entry into the Dfcu Rising Woman competition.

A Transformative Opportunity
In 2023, Maria submitted a last-minute application to Season 5 of the Rising Woman competition. Her proposal focused on building a community-based mushroom value chain rooted in health and empowerment. Despite her initial apprehension, Maria’s passion, clarity of purpose, and teaching background helped her deliver a compelling pitch. She emerged among the top winners.
Since then, her journey has taken her to regional trade expos, recognition by the African Development Bank, and opportunities to mentor fellow women entrepreneurs. Affectionately known as “Mama Butiko,” Maria has become a symbol of resilience and innovation.
The Power of a Platform

Maria is vocal about the ongoing challenges for women entrepreneurs—limited land access, lack of collateral, and gender bias. Yet her message is clear: “Start with what you have. Use your skills. Leverage opportunities. Rising Woman was mine.”
Her story reflects a broader truth: when women are empowered, entire communities benefit.
Still Rising, Still Transforming
As the Dfcu Rising Woman Initiative enters its seventh season, its mission continues—to nurture women-led businesses and build a more inclusive, equitable economy. And thanks to trailblazers like Maria Nakanwagi, the movement is mushrooming with hope and multiplying its impact across Uganda.
