Nomination portal now open ahead of high-level ceremony expected to host President Museveni and Kenyan President William Ruto.
The Health Innovation and Heroism Awards (HIHA) 2025 were officially launched with a strong call to action for affordable healthcare, innovation in self-care, and recognition of the unsung champions working tirelessly across Uganda’s health sector.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Charles Olaro, Director of General Health Services at the Ministry of Health, emphasized this year’s theme, which centers on self-care.
“We should stop thinking that medicine is the solution to everything,” Dr. Olaro noted. “Sometimes, the answer might simply be 30 minutes of physical activity, getting out of your chair and taking a walk.”
Dr. Olaro further urged stakeholders to reflect on the impact of previous HIHA awardees, many of whom continue to transform lives in their communities through innovative health solutions and grassroots engagement.

Dr. Andrew Bakainaga, Advisor at WHO Uganda, highlighted the urgent need to adapt in the face of shifting global priorities.
“In truth and in reality, the global funding landscape has drastically changed,” he said. “We need to move in a way that ensures everyone continues to have access to healthcare that is affordable and cost-effective.”
The event also celebrated the impact of past winners. Dr. Deogratious Delafrique, the 2023 Student Innovation Award recipient, shared how the recognition propelled his team to develop a new product — Cool Sting Pain Relief Lotion — made from eucalyptus and lemongrass oils. “Because of this award, I went back and thought about other questions we could explore,” he said.

Simon Mugerwa, who won Community Health Worker of the Year in 2024, revealed how the award opened new doors.
“I was able to talk to some of my friends in the US and interest them in carrying out a community engagement program,” he said. “It also helped me secure a better job.”
Nominations for the 6th edition of the HIHA Awards are now open. Ugandans are encouraged to visit www.hihaawards.com to nominate outstanding individuals and institutions in categories ranging from innovation to community service.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, with Kenyan President William Ruto expected as the chief guest and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni confirmed as guest of honor.
The HIHA Awards continue to grow as a platform that celebrates excellence, inspires new ideas, and drives community-based solutions in health and wellness across the region.
The launch was held under the theme: “Strengthening Health Systems: Empowering Communities Through Self-Care and Sustainable Solutions.”
