Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende has renewed calls for the release of political activist Bobi Young, real name Anthony Agaba, who is currently held at Luzira Upper Prison.
Malende visited Agaba on Wednesday afternoon ahead of his bail application hearing scheduled for August 11, 2025.
Speaking after the visit, Malende described Agaba as “frail and worried about his family,” highlighting that he is the sole breadwinner for his household. She said legal teams are actively engaging to ensure his release.

“Yeah, we are here today at Luzira Prison to check on comrade Bobi Young, real name Agaba Anthony,” Malende told the press. “His case comes up on the 11th of August, and we have come to interface with him in preparation. We are working hand in hand with fellow lawyers to see that justice is delivered.”
Malende thanked supporters and activists who have spoken out about the arrest and detention of opposition figures. She said their continued advocacy plays a critical role in pushing for justice.
Earlier in the day, Malende also met women’s groups in Kawempe, Mbogo, and Mulago, where she spoke about the power of protest voting and donated to their local business initiatives.

“We shall continue to serve the people of Kampala with utmost faith and integrity,” she affirmed.
Agaba’s detention and upcoming court appearance come amid growing concerns about the continued crackdown on opposition supporters and activists. Human rights defenders have increasingly called for fair legal processes and the end of politically motivated arrests.
The outcome of Agaba’s bail application will be closely watched by both his supporters and legal observers, as it may set a precedent for the treatment of other detained political activists.
