A viral video showing a passenger being forcibly removed from an Ibom Air flight after allegedly assaulting crew members has sparked nationwide controversy, leading to intervention by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, aboard Ibom Air Flight QI 341 from Uyo to Lagos. According to reports, passenger Comfort Emmanson refused to fully power off her mobile phone before takeoff, insisting that airplane mode was sufficient. The disagreement escalated when she allegedly slapped a flight attendant and physically resisted crew members attempting to enforce safety protocols. Airport security personnel intervened, forcibly removing Emmanson from the aircraft. A widely circulated video of the incident showed her being dragged off the plane, with her clothes torn in the process, partially exposing her. The footage triggered mixed reactions, with some condemning her actions while others criticized the handling of the situation as excessive.

Emmanson was subsequently charged with assault, remanded in prison, and handed a lifetime ban from Ibom Air. However, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and human rights groups condemned her treatment, citing concerns over proportionality and dignity.
In response to the backlash, Minister Keyamo ordered the withdrawal of charges against Emmanson, leading to her release. Despite her freedom, Emmanson has reportedly continued to experience physical and emotional distress following the altercation.
Ibom Air has stood by its safety policies, stating that compliance with crew instructions is non-negotiable. Meanwhile, aviation authorities have called for a review of protocols regarding passenger conduct and security responses to prevent similar incidents.
The case has reignited debates over passenger rights, airline enforcement, and the role of security personnel in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
