Kabalega International Airport in Hoima has successfully conducted its first test flight, marking a significant milestone in its readiness to support Uganda’s aviation sector.
According to the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), the test aimed to evaluate the airport’s capacity to handle large aircraft, including the Antonov, the world’s largest cargo plane.

Kabalega International Airport, which is part of the Kabalega Industrial Park, is poised to play a transformative role in Uganda’s export industry by enabling the efficient transport of heavy cargo.
UNOC officials highlighted the airport’s potential to enhance the country’s trade capabilities, particularly by providing an essential link for Uganda’s oil and gas sector.
Construction on the first phase of the airport, which began in 2018, is now 96.1% complete. Officials anticipate the project’s full completion by August 13, 2025, solidifying Kabalega as Uganda’s second international airport after Entebbe.
Once operational, Kabalega International Airport is expected to boost regional connectivity, streamline logistics, and attract investment to Hoima, positioning it as a strategic hub for industrial and commercial activities in East Africa.
