Albert Cook Tugume, the younger brother of Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, was fatally shot in an armed robbery at his mobile money shop in Ntinda, Kiwatule Zone, Nakawa Division.
The incident occurred around 7 PM on November 21 as Tugume prepared to close his shop.
According to police reports, armed assailants stormed the shop and demanded money.
A scuffle ensued during which a boda boda rider, Barnabas Sabiiti, 30, attempted to intervene. Sabiiti was shot by one of the robbers positioned nearby.
As Tugume tried to flee, the attackers pursued and shot him, killing him on the spot.
The suspects escaped with a bag believed to contain an unspecified amount of cash.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that police investigators arrived at the scene promptly and secured the area for forensic analysis.
“We have launched an investigation into this heinous act and are working tirelessly to track down the suspects,” Owoyesigyire said.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of mobile money agents in Uganda. The high-stakes nature of their work often makes them targets for violent crimes.
The police have called on the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation, emphasizing the need for vigilance and cooperation to combat rising crime.
Tugume’s death has left the Nyanjura family and the Kampala community in mourning. Doreen Nyanjura described her brother as a hardworking individual dedicated to supporting his family. “This is a deeply painful loss for us,” she said in a brief statement.
Investigations continue as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
