Kampala Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Shamim Malende is currently on bed rest, her office confirmed on Thursday.
The legislator has taken time off parliamentary and public duties due health complications following her manhandling by security operatives within the chambers of parliament.
A fortnight ago, while parliament passed the coffee bill amid chaos,Malende was among the 12 legislators who were beaten, roughed up and thrown out of parliament like children.
Malende, a vocal representative of the Kampala electorate and an active member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been advised by her doctors to take a break for proper recovery.
In a brief statement, Malende’s office expressed gratitude for the support and well-wishes from constituents and colleagues alike.
“The Honorable Shamim Malende is under medical care and on bed rest following health concerns. We appreciate the prayers and encouragement from all who stand with her during this time,” the statement read.
Known for her relentless advocacy for social justice and human rights, Malende has been a prominent figure in Uganda’s political arena. Her absence has been noted in parliamentary sessions, with several legislators extending their sympathies.
“We pray for Hon. Malende’s speedy recovery. Her contributions to our parliamentary deliberations and her work with the people of Kampala are invaluable,” said a fellow MP.
Despite her current condition, Malende’s team assures the public that she remains committed to serving her constituency once her health stabilizes.
Malende’s constituents and supporters have taken to social media to send messages of encouragement and solidarity, with the hashtag #GetWellSoonShamim trending locally.
Further updates on her health status and potential return to active duty are expected in the coming days.
