On the evening of May 10, 2025, the Kampala Serena Hotel transformed into a sanctuary of sound, soul, and sophistication as jazz enthusiasts, culture connoisseurs, and Uganda’s glitterati gathered for the sold-out Dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival.
Headlined by Grammy Award-winning American saxophonist Kirk Whalum and Uganda’s own globally celebrated Isaiah Katumwa, the inaugural edition delivered a masterclass in live music performance and set a new benchmark for cultural experiences in the region.
From the moment the lights dimmed and the first note floated through the Grand Ballroom, it was clear that this was no ordinary concert.

The night opened with a dynamic showcase by the Black Roots Academy of Soul, followed by the unmistakable groove of jazz pioneer Tshaka Mayanja. Their collaboration wove together elements of soul, R&B, and Afro-jazz, instantly captivating an audience hungry for musical depth.
But it was Isaiah Katumwa’s triumphant return to a Ugandan stage that ignited the emotional core of the evening. Fresh from a musical journey in the United States and preparing to mark 30 years in the jazz world, Katumwa’s heartfelt saxophone melodies—including fan favorite “My Joy”—resonated deeply with the crowd.
“This festival is a homecoming,” Katumwa told the audience. “I thank Dfcu Bank for giving me this platform after six years away, and for supporting my journey as I prepare to celebrate 30 years in jazz.”
Then came the moment that brought the room to its feet—Kirk Whalum. With his signature blend of jazz finesse, gospel richness, and spiritual storytelling, the American icon took guests on a sonic journey that stirred the soul.

His closing worship session, held just before midnight, was nothing short of transcendent, earning a prolonged standing ovation.
“Kampala has welcomed me with such warmth,” Whalum shared. “It’s an honor to perform here again, and I’m grateful to dfcu Bank for making this extraordinary night possible.”
But the Dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival wasn’t just about the music. The event was a visual and sensory spectacle. Kampala’s cultural elite turned out in high fashion, gracing the hotel’s elegant spaces with dazzling gowns, tailored tuxedos, and the unmistakable energy of a city that knows how to celebrate art in style.
With curated lifestyle experiences and tasteful ambiance, the night offered more than entertainment—it delivered a statement of class.

Speaking on the festival’s vision, Charles Mudiwa, CEO of Dfcu Bank, noted,
“At Dfcu, we believe in creating experiences that inspire. The Dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival connects people through music, community, and shared joy.”
As whispers of an even grander 2026 edition make their rounds, one thing is certain: the Dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival has arrived—not just as a concert, but as a cultural movement poised to become a cornerstone of Uganda’s creative calendar.
