A delegation of European Union (EU) envoys on Monday, May 12, held a high-level meeting with the top leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) at the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule.
The talks come as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.
The meeting was led by the European Union Head of Delegation to Uganda, H.E. Jan Sadek, and the NUP president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.
Addressing journalists after the closed-door discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and international engagement in promoting democratic processes.
A key focus of the meeting was the state of human rights in Uganda. Bobi Wine expressed concern over what he termed as “continued abuse of human rights, including unlawful detentions, suppression of opposition voices, and restrictions on freedoms of expression and assembly.”
Ambassador Sadek reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law in Uganda.
He noted that the EU was closely monitoring the country’s political climate ahead of the elections.
