Dozens of pilgrims remain stranded at Namugongo a day after the Martyrs Day 2025 celebrations, struggling to find transport back to their home districts.
Pilgrims from as far as Tororo, Fort Portal, and other regions have been seen camped along roadsides and in temporary shelters, appealing for assistance to return home. Many say they used all their savings to make the journey, leaving them without fare for the return trip.
“We came in faith and walked long distances, but now we’re stuck. We don’t even have money for food,” said one pilgrim from Tororo.

Every year on June 3, thousands of believers gather at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo to honor the 45 Ugandan martyrs who were killed for their faith in the late 1800s. This year’s celebration drew even larger crowds, but the influx appears to have overwhelmed available transport and logistical support.
Local leaders and humanitarian groups are now calling on government agencies and well-wishers to offer emergency support to help the stranded pilgrims return safely to their homes.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
