Democratic Front President and Parliamentary Commissioner Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba has cautioned voters in Buganda against electing leaders based on popularity or emotional excitement, urging them instead to prioritize competence and integrity in their choices.
Speaking during Sunday Mass at Luvule Catholic Parish in Nyendo-Mukungwe, Masaka City, Mpuuga criticized what he termed as a trend of electing leaders driven more by populism than by a genuine commitment to public service. He warned that such decisions have left Buganda underrepresented and vulnerable to political opportunism.
“Elections must be about competence, not convenience,” Mpuuga emphasized. “We must vote for people who demonstrate a vision for development and a track record of service to both Buganda and Uganda as a whole.”
His remarks come as the region prepares for the 2026 General Election, with increasing interest in leadership renewal and accountability.
During the service, Luvule Catholic Parish launched a fundraising campaign to raise over UGX 1.5 billion for the construction of a modern church. Mpuuga donated UGX 6.2 million to the initiative and pledged to mobilize additional support from other members of the faithful.
The Mass was led by Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Kagoma, who called on parishioners to unite in achieving the ambitious goal within the set timeframe.
Later that day, Mpuuga also contributed UGX 2 million to Butale Sub Parish Church in Kirowooza Parish, which is seeking UGX 7 million to secure lease payments for the land on which the church is located.
Mpuuga’s visit emphasized his dual focus on faith and leadership as central to community development.
