The Democratic Front (DF) Electoral Commission has announced a major shift in its nomination process, opting for regional nominations in a bid to streamline operations and ease the burden on party candidates.
Speaking to the media at the party’s headquarters in Namirembe, DF Electoral Commission Chairperson Mr. Henry Lubowa said the move aims to save time and reduce the logistical strain on aspirants.
Traditionally, candidates have been required to transport their supporters and nominators to Kampala, a process Mr. Lubowa described as “costly and unnecessary.”
“This week, we are taking nominations to the regions. Areas such as Soroti, Busoga, Busia, and others will have their candidates nominated locally,” said Mr. Lubowa.
The commission has so far nominated 239 candidates aspiring for various positions, including parliamentary seats and local government council roles. Today marked the eighth day of the exercise, with several notable candidates formally entering the race.
Among them is Mr. Robert Mukiibi, contesting for the Lubaga North MP seat. Speaking after his nomination, Mukiibi criticized the current area representative, saying Lubaga North “needs a strong voice in Parliament, which it currently lacks.”
Also nominated today were Mr. Ssenyonga Moses, seeking the party’s endorsement for Kampala Lord Mayor; Mr. Muhindo Kimasu, eyeing the Kampala Central Mayor seat; and Ms. Bulyaba Lydia Lucky, running for Woman Councilor for Kira Division in Kira Municipality.
The regional nomination drive is expected to increase participation and convenience for both candidates and their constituents as the party prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
