The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, has pledged to release all political prisoners, including former FDC president Col. (Rtd.) Dr. Kizza Besigye, if elected president in next year’s general elections.
Speaking to residents of Kyenjojo Town in the Tooro region, Mafabi said his government would not tolerate the persecution of Ugandans based on their political beliefs.
“Ugandans know it is not me who imprisoned Besigye, but President Museveni’s government. If I come to power and find him still in prison, I will release him immediately,” Mafabi declared. He added that his administration would work to ensure justice, unity, and freedom of political expression across the country.
Mafabi, who has been traversing the Tooro sub-region to consolidate support, faced logistical setbacks earlier in the day due to poor road conditions and heavy rains in Mbale Town Council, Kyenjojo District. His convoy struggled to navigate the muddy terrain, delaying his scheduled rallies.
This evening, the FDC candidate moved into the Bunyoro sub-region to continue his vote-hunting campaign. However, reports indicate that Mafabi was blocked by security personnel from accessing Kagadi District, where he had planned to hold his next rally.
This was on grounds that it was past campaign time at 6pm as stipulated by the Electoral Commission.
The development has sparked concern among opposition supporters, who accuse authorities of curtailing political freedoms ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Despite the setback, Mafabi vowed to continue his campaign, saying he is determined to “bring change and restore democratic governance in Uganda.”
He is due to campaign in Hoima and other Bunyoro areas tomorrow.
