Edward Sebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, the civilian bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine, has been committed to the High Court for trial and remanded to Murchison Bay Prison in Luzira.
Masaka Grade One Magistrate Abdallah Kayiza, who presided over the hearing, also directed that Mutwe be given immediate access to specialized medical treatment following his alarming physical condition.
Mutwe appeared visibly frail and shaken in court, displaying what he claimed were torture marks inflicted during his recent detention in military custody. His physical state, including uncontrollable shivering, drew gasps from the courtroom.
“I take 12 painkillers every day. I’m dying… I feel I’m dying,” Mutwe told the court in a trembling voice. “If they must cut off my arms, let it be done so that I can get some treatment.”
Bobi Wine, who was present during the proceedings, reiterated that Mutwe had earlier told him he had been electrocuted, waterboarded, and severely beaten while in custody.
The case has sparked renewed concerns over the treatment of political detainees in Uganda, with human rights advocates calling for an independent investigation into the allegations of torture.
Magistrate Kayiza emphasized that while the trial process must proceed, the suspect’s health must not be compromised. Mutwe will remain in custody at Luzira Prison pending further proceedings in the High Court
