It reads like a film script rejected for being too unrealistic. In 2007, a 20-year-old, intensely introverted Lionel Messi knelt over a blue plastic bathtub in the Camp Nou visitors’ locker room, tentatively washing a smiling six-month-old infant.
Nearly two decades later, that photo has erupted into a global phenomenon, confirmed by UNICEF as entirely real and signalling what the world is calling a prophetic passing of the torch.
The infant in the tub was none other than Lamine Yamal.
The photo shoot was organised by the Catalan newspaper Sport and UNICEF for a 2008 charity calendar. Yamal’s family, living in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró, won a raffle to participate. Through pure, cosmic randomness, their baby boy was paired with the rising Argentine maestro.
Freelance photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the image, recalled that Messi “was as stiff as a broom” and terrified of how to hold a baby.
Monfort had to use a plastic duck from his own daughter’s collection to ease the tension and coax out the baby’s laughter. “We can say I sweated some blood to take it,” Monfort told reporters.
The image lay forgotten in family albums until Yamal’s father posted it during the 2024 European Championship.
