Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), in Equatorial Guinea has been sacked following the leak of over 400 explicit videos allegedly involving him and spouses of prominent figures in the country.
Engonga’s termination, formalized through Decree No. 118/2024 on November 4, cited misconduct and behavior deemed “incompatible with public office.”
The government’s decision follows a growing scandal after videos surfaced online, allegedly depicting Engonga in compromising situations with multiple women, including the wife of his brother, the vice president’s wife, and the spouse of the inspector general of police.
The situation has sparked public and media outcry, placing pressure on authorities to respond.
Engonga is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo, the current president of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), which has fueled additional scrutiny on the family and its influence within the government.
In a statement, the government cited “family-related and social behavior” as grounds for Engonga’s removal, reflecting a strong stance on public ethics and accountability in governance.
Engonga’s dismissal has intensified discussions in Equatorial Guinea around standards of conduct for public officials, with many citizens calling for heightened transparency and integrity in the country’s governance.
