Construction of Kabalega International Airport in Hoima, Uganda’s second international airport, is now 96.1% complete.
Originally launched in 2018, the airport is expected to be fully operational by August 13, 2025, positioning itself as a significant milestone in Uganda’s economic and infrastructural development.
Located near the oil-rich Albertine Graben region, Kabalega International Airport is seen as a gateway for both local and international investors, particularly in the petroleum sector.

Its proximity to the Hoima oil fields is intended to support efficient transport of goods and resources crucial for the production and export of oil, contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
The airport will play a central role in facilitating operations related to the Uganda-Tanzania East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, a 1,443-kilometer pipeline intended to transport oil from Uganda to the Tanzanian coast.
Designed to handle both passenger and cargo traffic, Kabalega International Airport will diversify Uganda’s aviation infrastructure, currently centered on Entebbe International Airport.
The new airport is expected to alleviate traffic pressure at Entebbe, enhancing Uganda’s appeal as a logistics and trade hub in East Africa.
Ministerial and local government sources have highlighted the airport’s role in regional economic integration and employment generation. With the project near completion, there is a growing sense of anticipation among business stakeholders in the agriculture, mining, and tourism sectors. The development is expected to provide new opportunities for local communities.
The August 2025 completion is eagerly awaited as Uganda continues to enhance its standing in the global economy.
