The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Ms. Mariam Wangadya, has directed the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to immediately release Mr. Eddie Mutwe, the head of security for opposition leader Bobi Wine.
The order follows Gen. Muhoozi’s widely circulated remarks claiming that he was personally holding Mr. Mutwe in his basement. The statement has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns over arbitrary detention and abuse of power.
In a press briefing held on Thursday, Ms. Wangadya emphasized that no individual, regardless of rank or position, is above the law. “The Uganda Human Rights Commission strongly condemns unlawful detention. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Mutwe, or his presentation before a competent court,” she stated.
She further warned that holding a citizen in a private location without due process violates constitutional rights and international human rights conventions to which Uganda is a signatory.
The development has reignited tensions between security forces and opposition supporters, who view the incident as yet another example of political repression. Gen. Muhoozi, who is also President Museveni’s son, had not issued a formal response by press time.
The UHRC is expected to launch investigations into the matter.
