Popular musician and actress Stecia Mayanja today officially entered active politics, announcing her bid for the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 General Election.
Mayanja was unveiled as the new President of the National Peasants Party (NPP) during a press conference held in Kampala, marking a dramatic shift from her celebrated entertainment career to national leadership. The event drew supporters, party officials, and members of the media.
In her remarks, Mayanja said her decision to join politics was driven by a desire to amplify the voices of ordinary Ugandans, especially women and youth struggling with poverty and unemployment.
“I have lived the challenges many Ugandans face. As President of NPP and a Kampala Woman MP aspirant, I am stepping forward to be a voice for the voiceless,” she said.
She will challenge incumbent Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who has represented Kampala since 2021.
Mayanja’s political debut adds to a growing list of Ugandan artists transitioning into public leadership. She vowed to run a people-centered campaign focused on equity, empowerment, and service to the marginalized.
NPP says it is committed to addressing the everyday struggles of Ugandans and plans to field candidates from the village level to the presidency, with the goal of challenging President Museveni’s four-decade rule.
