The fast-growing hospitality industry in Uganda presents an incredibly lucrative frontier for young job seekers, yet a persistent deficit in practical training makes breaking into the field surprisingly difficult.
Addressing this critical workforce gap, Uganda Breweries Limited celebrated a major milestone in Jinja on June 19, 2026, by graduating 100 young adults from its flagship corporate social responsibility initiative.
The cohort completed an intensive, three-day Learning for Life hospitality and entrepreneurship training program hosted at the landmark Crested Crane Hotel.
This milestone marks a critical phase of a broader commitment by the beverage giant to equip more than 300 young Ugandans within the current financial year, specifically targeting those who have historically faced structural barriers to formal education and stable employment.
The intensive curriculum was explicitly engineered to build a balance of technical expertise and commercial acumen.
Over the three days, participants mastered vital service competencies, covering customer service philosophy, bar operations, responsible beverage service, health and safety compliance, and corporate communication.
Crucially, the training extended past technical execution into long-term wealth creation by integrating financial literacy, leadership theory, and overall workplace readiness.
According to Sheila Sabune, Corporate Affairs Director at Uganda Breweries Limited, the country’s youth possess immense raw potential but frequently lack access to structured, practical market opportunities.
By focusing heavily on the intersection of technical knowledge and an entrepreneurial mindset, the company aims to actively bridge this opportunity gap and create self-sustaining livelihoods.
The life-changing reality of this corporate intervention was captured perfectly by Kulijo Frank, who spoke on behalf of the graduating F26 cohort.
He noted that obtaining the certification changes absolutely everything, serving as the definitive bridge between mere daily survival and actually thriving in a competitive economy.
The final day of the program challenged participants to test their newly acquired skills during a competitive showcase and certificate awards ceremony. Deserving youth were recognised across elite performance categories including Leadership Excellence, Top Mixology Skills, and Best Team Player.
Rather than simply handing out certificates and letting the graduates navigate the job hunt alone, the program built a direct bridge to immediate financial independence. Upon graduation, the youth participated in structured speed-matching sessions with prominent regional hospitality employers.
This tactical arrangement bypasses standard entry-level hiring friction, opening immediate pathways to corporate internships, hands-on work experience, and permanent job placements.
Richard Kawere, Principal of the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute, strongly commended the collaborative setup.
He emphasised that highly intensive, practical training models are vital for aligning academic training directly with modern market demands, ultimately raising the baseline standard of professionalism across the local sector.
Delivered in close collaboration with development partners Enterprise Uganda and EXP, the Learning for Life initiative stands out as UBL’s premier vehicle for boosting employability among marginalised groups.
By combining foundational life skills with aggressive, hands-on hospitality instruction, the program empowers young adults with the confidence and operational knowledge needed to succeed.
As these 100 newly certified professionals step directly into the commercial ecosystem, they introduce an elite new tier of talent to the market. Their deployment is a massive step forward in transforming Uganda’s local hospitality scene into a diverse, world-class tourism powerhouse.
