Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote has unveiled plans to construct Africa’s largest detergent feedstock plant within the Dangote Refinery complex, marking a major expansion of the conglomerate’s petrochemical ambitions.
The proposed facility will produce 400,000 tonnes of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) annually — a key raw material used in the manufacture of detergents and cleaning products. At full capacity, the plant is expected to meet the entire continent’s demand for LAB, significantly reducing Africa’s dependence on imports from Asia and the Middle East.
The project, scheduled for completion within 30 months, indicates the refinery’s evolution from a fuel-processing installation into a diversified industrial hub.
Industry analysts say the integration of detergent feedstock production into the refinery complex will create operational efficiencies, leveraging existing infrastructure, utilities and logistics networks.
By localising LAB production, the investment is expected to cut input costs for African detergent manufacturers, improve supply chain reliability and conserve foreign exchange previously spent on imports.
The development also strengthens Nigeria’s position as a regional petrochemical powerhouse, expanding its export potential beyond refined petroleum products.
The refinery, one of the largest single-train facilities globally, has already altered fuel trade flows in West Africa. The addition of a large-scale LAB plant signals a deliberate strategy to deepen value addition within the hydrocarbons chain and capture higher-margin segments of the chemicals market.
For consumer goods manufacturers across Africa, the move could translate into more stable pricing and improved access to essential inputs, particularly as population growth and urbanisation drive rising demand for household cleaning products.
The expansion further cements Dangote’s ambition to transform Nigeria into a net exporter of refined fuels and petrochemicals, positioning the country as a critical supplier within Africa’s industrialisation agenda.
