Makerere University’s Department of Journalism and Communication has successfully hosted the 26th Annual Media Convention, held at the Yusuf Lule Teaching Facility Auditorium. This year’s convention centered on the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Social Networks to Combat Misinformation,” highlighting the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age.

Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, represented by State Minister for National Guidance Hon. Kabbyanga Baluku Godfrey, emphasized the accelerating spread of misinformation due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). He acknowledged that while misinformation is not new, AI’s capabilities have significantly increased its speed and reach. He called for a culture of responsible AI use and encouraged interdisciplinary research to address the challenges posed by AI-driven misinformation.
Keynote speakers included Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communication Commission, and Prof. Bruce Mutsvairo, Chair of Media and the Global South at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Both speakers provided insights into the impact of AI and social networks on media and communication.

The convention also served as a platform to honor Dr. Adolf Mbaine, a distinguished figure in the media landscape, who is retiring after over 25 years of service. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Mbaine expressed pride in his contributions to the field ahead of his retirement in September.
The event featured three panel discussions and concluded with the presentation of student excellence awards. Notable recipients included Miriam Najjingo, who received the Cranmer Mugerwa Award from Vision Group; Oroma Hope, who won the award for the best Communication student from the Public Relations Association of Uganda; and the Tebere Mudin Award for the overall best student, presented by Nation Media Group was taken by Olara Moses.
The convention was organized by Yasmin Katushabe and sponsored by the Uganda Communication Commission, Bank of Uganda, and Uganda Tourism Board.
