The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued a stern warning against increasing acts of vandalism targeting streetlights along the Kampala Northern Bypass, raising alarm over the threat posed to public safety.
In a statement titled “Vandalism Alert—Kampala Northern Bypass”, the Ministry noted that crucial road infrastructure, particularly streetlights installed to enhance night-time visibility and reduce traffic accidents, are being deliberately damaged or stolen by unknown individuals.
“This practice compromises public safety,” the statement emphasized, urging citizens to treat road assets as shared property that should be protected. The Ministry stressed that such vandalism not only endangers motorists and pedestrians but also results in costly repairs that divert funds from other critical development projects.
The Kampala Northern Bypass, a key transport corridor linking several suburbs and industrial zones, has seen a rise in nighttime traffic and accidents in areas left dark due to missing or damaged lights. Authorities say the lack of illumination has increased the risk of road crashes, theft, and other security concerns.
The Ministry is now calling on the public to be vigilant and help curb this trend by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station. “Let’s guard these assets against vandalism,” the appeal reads.
Security agencies are reportedly stepping up surveillance in hotspot areas as investigations into the incidents intensify. Meanwhile, civic groups have welcomed the Ministry’s call and urged communities to take ownership of public infrastructure.
