Marriott International has entered the Cape Verde market with the opening of the Four Points by Sheraton São Vicente Resort, signaling a strategic expansion into high-growth island destinations and underscoring rising investor interest in the West African tourism sector.
The beachfront property, located above Laginha Beach in Mindelo on São Vicente Island, represents Marriott’s first hotel in Cape Verde and a broader push to scale its select-service portfolio across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The opening also marks the company’s 500th select-service hotel in the region and the first resort under the Four Points by Sheraton brand in Africa.
Industry analysts view the move as a calculated bet on Cape Verde’s growing global appeal as a leisure and business destination. The archipelago has increasingly attracted international visitors and investment, supported by its stable political environment, improving air connectivity and expanding hospitality infrastructure.
“This is a milestone that reflects both market demand and our confidence in emerging destinations,” said Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, Vice President for Premium, Select and Midscale Brand Management in EMEA at Marriott.
The 127-room resort blends leisure and business offerings, with conference facilities, multiple dining outlets, a spa, and direct beach access. Its positioning aligns with a growing segment of travellers seeking midscale accommodation that combines affordability with consistent global standards.
For Marriott, the expansion highlights the increasing importance of select-service brands, which now account for more than 30 percent of its EMEA portfolio. These properties typically deliver higher returns through lower development and operating costs while catering to a broader customer base.
The entry into Cape Verde also reflects intensifying competition among global hotel chains for Africa’s emerging tourism markets. As infrastructure improves and regional travel rebounds, international operators are accelerating their footprint to capture early-mover advantage.
With São Vicente known for its cultural vibrancy and music heritage, Marriott is banking on experiential travel trends to differentiate the property while anchoring long-term growth in the region.
